A ceremonial-grade hojicha from Uji, Japan, ground into a fine powder for whisking. Deep roasted flavor with warm caramel and nutty notes, earthy and woodsy without any bitterness. From the same region that produces Japan's most celebrated ceremonial matcha, made as hojicha for those who want the ritual without the caffeine.

Ceremonial Grade · Uji Origin · Low Caffeine · Single Origin

Why we like it

  • Uji, Japan is where Japan's finest ceremonial teas come from; this hojicha is from the same growing region, just roasted rather than steamed, which transforms it into something entirely different
  • Ground to a ceremonial-grade powder, which means a smoother, finer texture than culinary hojicha and a richer cup when whisked
  • Reviewers describe it as almost coffee-like without the bitterness, warming, nutty, caramel; one first-time hojicha drinker said she might prefer it to regular matcha

Details

  • Maker: Isshiki Matcha (New York, NY)
  • Origin: Uji, Japan
  • Size: 30g (about 20 servings)
  • Best for: hojicha lattes, afternoons and evenings, anyone who finds matcha too grassy or stimulating, cold brew

How to enjoy

Whisk 1-2 teaspoons of hojicha powder with 8oz of 170-180°F water until smooth and frothy. For a latte, use less water and add steamed or cold milk to taste. Cold brew: steep in room-temperature water for 4-6 hours in the fridge for a naturally sweet, mellow iced hojicha. Oat milk and a pinch of cinnamon work especially well.

Ingredients
